Sketches
Warning: I am the absolute worst drawer in the whole world. It’s a wonder how I ever got into this school, let alone passed drawing class. But I did my best to sketch out what the images are going to look like, and I added some labels for the real difficult ones.

Project 3 Ideas
So since I missed last class I’m still sort of trying to get this project clear in my head, but here’s my idea anyway. My words are truth/fiction.
My character is a dress and throughout the five pieces it’s going to be displayed in five different settings, starting as ridiculous and ending in a normal, expected situation. The dress will be on a model shown jogging, grocery shopping, at the park, in restaurant, and in the street hailing a cab. I don’t have all the compositions figured out exactly but I’ll be using jogging for expressive line, grocery store for fluorescents, in the park for cubism, restaurant for metallics, and hailing a cab for black and white.

Characted Design Story
Everyday is the same. Pushed to the left, pushed to the right. I hang, patiently, gleaming, waiting for the right person to pick me up. Day after day I get shoved into women’s armpits, along with their fall sweaters and jeans. I have learned that I’m never going to be a woman’s first choice. Most of these women are looking for practicality, a new fall wardrobe, wearability. I am a dress that spends 80% of its life hanging in a closet. But someday, the right woman will come along. I will be hers and only hers. Of course, like everyone, she won’t wear me all the time. When she does pull me out of the closet though, she’ll be a new person. The way her self-confidence goes through the roof, it’s as if I’m whispering compliments in her ear.
Each one of us wishes for that day, and for me, it came today. A woman tried me on with a few other items, I was definitely among the favorites, but she didn’t buy me. She carried me around for a while, contemplating. At the last minute, I was returned to the rack and she bought something else. I was devastated, I thought that was my last chance. The following week was similar to the preceding weeks, being picked up and put back over and over again. Then one day, the woman was back. She came straight up to me and grabbed me off the rack. This time she didn’t even try me on, just walked straight up to the cash register and swiped her card.
She took me home and put me on immediately. This was it, I was hers.

Character Design Ideas
So far I’ve been having some issues coming up with a concrete idea for this project. I’m a photo major so I definitely want to stick with photography as my medium. I’ve talked to Charlotte and I’ve talked to Duncan and I’ve talked to myself multiple times. Duncan suggested a photo illustration. I normally do documentary/photojournalistic work but I wasn’t sure that would work that well for this project. So I started thinking about more formal, composed compositions. I started thinking about portraiture/fashion. The idea in the front of my mind right now is fashion; eight fashion shots, all illustrating a different word (symmetrical, geometric, etc.). I’m still deciding whether to do one outfit and have the setting describe the word, or multiple outfits and have the clothing do the illustrating. Another idea I have tossed around is portraits. Possibly having make up illustrate the words, or crazy face paint. I also thought about doing a diptych for each word, with a close up portrait on the left, and a photograph of shoes (on feet) on the right, having both the face and the feet describe the word. With each of these, the character would most likely be the model, except for the fashion shots the clothing would be the character. Help!
